BANGKOK REEL CLUB
Everyone is welcome to join us, not just Scots. There are several nationalities in our group of regular dancers! It is a fun way to exercise and meet new people.
What is Scottish Country Dancing?
- Social dancing style first popular in Scotland during the 18th century and then revived by the Royal Scottish Country Dance Society during the 1920s.
- Considered the traditional “ballroom dancing” of Scotland.
- Done with a partner (a different person for each dance, typically) in “sets” of 3 to 5 couples.
- Consists of a series of patterns that you, your partner, and the other dancers in your set make on the floor, usually causing each couple to rotate to a different position. The series of patterns is then repeated until each couple has danced from every position.
- Danced to jigs, reels, and strathspeys using specialized steps that involve a lot of skipping, hopping, and toe pointing.
- NOT Highland dancing!
Is it ceilidh dancing?
Ceilidh is a more informal form of dance but they have much in common.
What do I need?
Comfortable clothing in which you can move easily.
Shoes with a soft, non-slip sole, such as jazz or ballet shoes, canvas plimsolls or
trainers.
Dance evenings are held on the second and fourth Mondays of each month at
The Royal Oak in Bangkok. Arthur McNeill, who trained as a Country dance
teacher with the RSCDS, keeps us on our toes, introducing new dances, as well
as practising familiar ones. Everyone is welcome to join us, not just Scots.
